근본적으로, 깊이, 의식이 그 내용을 바꿀 때

so one has to enquire very deeply into what is compassion

 

무엇이 자비인지, 아주 깊이 탐구해야 한다

 

we have talked very clearly about clarity, skill,

and the dangers of skill without clarity,

skill then becomes means of self-aggrandizement,

the aggrandizement of a nation, of a group,

the whole process of it

 

명확성, 기술에 대해 아주 명확하게 얘기를 했다

그리고 명확성 없는 기술의 위험,

그러면 기술이 자기 과장의 수단이 된다

한 나라의, 한 단쳬의 과장,

그 온 과정이

 

so we are saying,

there are three things we must understand very carefully

understand, in the sense, not intellectually, not verbally,

but actually see the quality of it

 

그래서 우리는 말하고 있다,

세 가지를 우리가 아주 신중하게 이해해야 한다

지적으로 이해하는 것이 아니라, 말로 이해하는 것이 아니라,

실제로 그것의 특질을 보는 것이다

 

three things which are compassion, clarity, and skill

and when there is compassion, 

there is no division between clarity and skill

it's one movement

 

자비, 명확성, 기술, 세 가지

그리고 자비가 있을 때, 명확성과 기술 사이에 구분이 없다

하나의 움직임이다

 

and because we are caught up in skill, we don't see the total movement

so what is the nature and the structure of compassion?

to understand it, one must go into the whole question of pleasure, love, suffering, death

you can't just say, 'i have compassion'

 

우리가 기술에 사로잡히기 때문에, 전체 움직임을 보지 못한다

 

그래서 자비의 본성과 짜임새는 무엇인가

그것을 이해하기 위해서는,

즐거움, 사랑, 고통, 죽음의 질문으로 온통 들어서야 한다

그대는 그냥, '난 자비를 갖고 있다'라 말할 수 없다

 

the mind that says, 'i'm compassionate' is not compassionate

you understand?

i wonder if you do

when the mind says, 'i'm intelligent', it's no longer intelligent

because it's conscious of itself

when it's conscious of itself, there's no intelligence

 

'난 자비롭다'라 말하는 마음은 자비롭지 않다

이해하는가

이해하는지 모르겠다

 

'난 지성적이다'라 말하는 마음은 더 이상 지성적이지 않다

그것이 그 자신을 의식하므로

그것이 그 자신을 의식할 때, 지성은 없다

 

so one must go into this question,

what is the depth and the meaning and the significance, and the beauty of compassion?

and to do that, we must enquire not only, as we did, into fear but also into pleasure

is love pleasure?

is love desire?

is love of another remembrance?

is love of another image?

 

그래서 이 질문으로 들어서야 한다,

자비의 깊이와 의미, 중요성, 아름다움이 무엇인가

그리고 그러기 위해서는, 우리가 했던 두려움에 대한 탐구 뿐 아니라, 즐거움에 대해서도 해야 한다

 

사랑은 즐거움인가

사랑은 욕망인가

사랑은 떠올리는 것인가

사랑은 또 다른 이미지인가

 

all these are involved, when we think over together this question of compassion

and we can only go into it, when we go together,

not the speaker goes into it and you just listen,

when we go together into it

because a human being is not alone

he's the essence of all human beings

and that's a fact

that's a reality

 

이런 모든 것들이 개입된다,

우리가 이 자비에 대한 질문에 대해 함께 생각할 때

그리고 그것으로 들어설 때, 우리가 함께

 

말하는 사람은 그것으로 들어서고, 그대는 그냥 듣는 것이 아니라

우리가 함께 그것으로 들어설 때

왜냐하면 하나의 인간은 혼자가 아니다

그는 인간 존재들의 본질이다

그리고 그것은 사실 이다

실제다

 

that's not my invention, my wanting to identify myself with the whole

the absolute fact is you as a human being living through millennia after millennia,

you are the representative of the whole of mankind,

that mankind has suffered, agonized, shed tears, killed and been killed, jealous, angry, anxious,

seeking pleasure, caught in fear, 

you're all that

therefore you're the entire humanity

 

내가 만들어낸 것이 아니다

내가 나 자신을 전체와 함께인 것으로 원하는 것이 아니다

절대적인 사실이, 

무수한 시간 이후 무수한 시간을 거쳐 사는 한 인간 존재로서의 그대,

그대가 인류 전체의 대표다

인류는 고통을 겪고, 몸부림 치고, 눈물을 흘리고, 죽이고, 죽임을 당하고, 질투하고, 화를 내고, 불안해하고,

즐거움을 찾고, 두려움에 잡힌다

그대가 그 모든 것이다

그래서 그대가 온 인류다

 

and when there is a total revolution in this consciousness,

the revolution affects the consciousness of mankind,

that's a fact

that's why it's so urgently important

that each one of us listens, and you are good enough to listen,

serious enough to take the journey together

when fundamentally, deeply, consciousness changes its content,

you will affect the whole of mankind

 

이 의식에서 완전한 혁명이 있을 때

그 개혁은 인류의 의식에 영향을 미친다

그것은 사실 이다

그래서 그것은 아주 긴급하게 중요하다

우리 각자 귀 기울여 듣는다

그리고 그대는 충분히 잘 들을 수 있다

여정을 함께 하기에 충분히 진지하다

 

근본적으로, 깊이, 의식이 그 내용을 바꿀 때

그대는 인류 전체에 영향을 미칠 것이다
