이상하게 우리는,

자신을 생각과 동일시한다

하지만 생각은 나무처럼 우리가 아는 것이지,

우리인 것이 아니다

the mind is the activities of thoughts and perceptions,

feelings, emotions, intuition, memory

so these are what you know

they are not what you are

so to identify yourself with them limits or seems to limit your being

you don't identify yourself with a tree

because a tree is what you know, it's what you perceive

마음은

생각과 인식, 느낌, 감정, 직관, 기억의 활동이다

이것들은 그대가 아는 것이다

그대인 것이 아니다

그것들과 그대를 동일시하는 것은

그대를 제한하거나,

제한된 것처럼 보이게 한다

나무와 자신을 동일시 하지는 않을 것이다

나무는 그대가 아는 것, 그대가 인식하는 것이므로

but strangely, we do identify ourselves with thoughts

but our thoughts like the tree are what we know

they're not what we are

하지만 이상하게 우리는,

자신을 생각과 동일시한다

하지만 생각은 나무처럼 우리가 아는 것이지,

우리인 것이 아니다

and the apparently separate self is a mixture of

what we essentially are,

plus thoughts, feelings, sensations,

with the content of experience

and this mixture of the two creates an apparently finite self

독립적으로 존재하는 것으로 보이는 자신 은

본질적으로 우리인 것에,

생각, 느낌, 감각이 더해진 것,

경험 내용이 더해진 것이다

둘이 섞인 것이, 유한한 자신처럼 보이는 것을 만들어낸다

just like the vast space of the universe

plus the four walls of this room 

makes what seems to be a temporary finite space in this room

there's no temporary finite space in this room

this temporary finite space is an illusion

that is the result of the vast space of the universe

plus the four walls of this room

우주의 광대한 공간에

이 방의 네 벽이 더해지는 것과 마찬가지다

이 방에 잠시 제한된 공간이 있는 것으로 보인다

이 방으로 잠시 제한된 공간이란 없다

이 일시적으로 유한한 공간은 

광대한 우주 공간에, 이 방의 네 벽이 더해진 결과다

so the separate self is an illusion that is caused by

an apparent mixture of infinite being with the content of experience

별개로 존재하는 자신이란

무한한 존재와 경험 내용이 섞인 것이 보이는 환영이다

중요한 것은, 그대의 생각이 그대의 경험과 충돌하지 않는 것이다

그대의 생각은 그대의 경험과 일치해야 한다

for someone whose identity and life is invested in becoming,

then this approach is a real confrontation

not just with that impulse of becoming,

but more importantly with the identity that is invested in that activity

so what we do here is a profound challenge

to the ego or the felt sense of separation

because the ego can exist in a very fine form

자신의 정체성과 삶이

'되어가는' 에 투자되어 있는 이에게

이 접근법은 정말이지 맞서는 것이다

buddhism is supposed to liberate you from your attachment,

now the same identity is invested in being a buddhist 

or a ramana maharshi student

불교는 그대가 그대의 집착에서 벗어나도록 하는 것이다

and our deep attachment to buddhism or our teacher,

it's beautiful

it's an expression of our love of truth

but at some stage, it becomes a limitation

and for one whose identity is invested in their practice

or their teacher or their teaching or their tradition,

that's very hard to give up

불교에 혹은 우리 스승에게의 깊은 집착,

그건 아름답다

우리의 진리에 대한 사랑의 표현이다

하지만 어느 단계에 이르면, 그것이 제한이 된다

so if often precipitate a crisis in you

and this is what i sense in you now

so the identity that was invested in doing and achieving

and becoming, and eventually become enlightened,

that project has been dismantled simply through understanding

내가 지금 그대 안에서 느끼는 것이다

하기, 성취하기, 되어가기, 결국 깨닫기에 투자된 정체성이,

그 투사가,

이해를 통해 해체되고 있다

i don't mind at all if your ideas clash with mine

what's important is that your ideas don't clash with your experience,

your ideas are true of your experience

and your ideas must come from your experience

난 그대의 생각이 나의 생각과 충돌하는 것엔 전혀 개의치 않는다

중요한 것은, 그대의 생각이 그대의 경험과 충돌하지 않는 것이다

그대의 생각은 그대의 경험과 일치해야 한다

그래서 그대의 생각은 그대의 경험에서 나와야 한다

what most people do is that in our culture,

we've been brought up with a paradigm of separation

we don't relaize it, but we've learned

and we've imposed that on our being

so throughly that we really feel that separation is real

대부분의 사람들이 하는 것은,

우리 문화에서, 우리는 분리의 페러다임으로 자랐다,

우린 그것을 알아차리지 못한다

하지만 그렇게 배웠다

그리고 그것이 우리 존재에 짐으로 엎어져 있다

so don't let your ideas prevent you from going to your being

don't let them conflict with your being

경험은 재밌다

경험의 부재는 지루하다

존재는 평화롭다

그대는 경험의 부재에 이르러 있다

생각, 인식 이전

아직, 경험이 얼마나 재밌는데 라는 기억이다

그리고 비어 있는 마음 상태

그건 노트북의 프로그램을 모두 닫은 것과 같다

비어 있는 화면 보호기

한 걸음 더 뒤로,

화면으로 물러나야 한다

하지만 이 결핍갑과 지루함을 느끼면서,

그 불편함에서 벗어나기 위해,

다시 생각과  인식들로 들어선다면,

결코 더 나아가지 못할 것이다

그러니 지루함과 머물러야 한다

지루함을 향해라,

그것을 떠나는 것이 아니라

왜냐하면 그대가 정말 원하던 것은

지루함 바로 뒤에 있다

지루함을 환영해라, 받아들여라

두꺼비에게 키스를 해라. 공주로 변할 것이다

지루함은 평화로 변할 것이다

참을 수 없는 무언가, 지루함이

그대가 정말로 바라던 것으로 바뀔 것이다

하지만 그대가 지루함에서 돌아선다면, 아니다

experience is interesting

the absence of experience is boring

and being is at peace

so you've got to the absence of experience

what you are prior to thoughts and perceptions

but you're still retaining the memory of how interesting experience is

and you're resting in a blank state of mind

it's like you've closed down all the programms on your laptop

and you're stuck with the blank screensaver

you've got to go back one more step to the screen

but if you feel this lack and boredom, 

and in order to escape from the discomfort of it,

you then take off again into thoughts and perceptions

you'll never get further back

so you have to stay with the boredom,

turn towards it, not away from it

because what you really long for,

it's just behind the boredom

so welcome it, embrace it, kiss the toad

it's ll turn into the princess

boredom will turn into peace

something that is unbearable, boredom,

will turn into what you truly long for

but not if you turn away

in this approach,

the only purpose of this engaging in this path of dicrimination

is to correct the misunderstanding

that what i am is primarly a body

이 접근에서는,

being a body is not your primary experience

being aware is your primary experience

but in order to arrivee at that understanding,

you have to discriminate between the sensations and perceptions

that you previously considered yourself to be

i am this knowing presence, this witnessing presence'

몸인 것은 그대의 근본적 경험이 아니다

자각이 그대의 근본 경험이다 ( i am )

하지만 그 이해에 이르기 위해,

이전에 자신으로 생각한, 감각과 인식을 구별해야 한다

지금은 그대가

'그것들은 나 가 아니고, 내가 아는 것이다,

나는 이 아는 존재, 목격하는 존재다' 라 이해한다

that involves some negation

it's just the first step, i am awareness

the next step, you the explore the nature of awareness

then you have to go back to the experience

from which you previously separated yourself and reconcile it

until you arrive at the understanding we're speaking of

where there is just the infinite

there's no question of discriminating between the real and the unreal

그것에 부정이 좀 들어간다

그것이 첫번째 단계다, '난 자각이다'

그 다음은,

자각의 본성을 탐험한다

그러면 그대가 이전에 분리한 것과 화해해야 한다

우리가 말하고 있는, 단지 무한이 있을 뿐인 이해에 이를 때까지

마음이 흥분하거나, 동요하거나, 혹은 어느 다른 상태거나

그것이 문제인 것은 아니다

하지만 그대의 존재는 흥분하지 않는다

그 본성은 평화와 충족이다

흥분한 결과로 얻으리라 기대하는 것에 두어져 있다면,

아직 존재에서 있는 것이 아니다

다른 말로 하면, 

흥분이,

그대를 충족시키기 위해

누군가나 무언가를 향해 나아가도록 하는 것이라면,

그 흥분은 환영의 자신을 대신해, 그대 안에서 일어나는 것이다

하지만 환영의 자신을 대신해 일어나지 않는 흥분도 있다

그것 괜찮다, 문제 없다

흥분은, 그대의 마음이거나 몸이다

이 방 공간은 동요하거나 흥분하지 않는다

방 안의 사람들이 동요하거나 흥분한다

존재는 동요하거나 흥분하지 않는다

유한한 마음의 관점에서,

온 우주가

존재의 진동 같아 보인다 라 할 수는 있다

이 온 우주가

좁혀진 관점에서 볼 때에는,

무한한 존재 혹은 무한 의식의 활동이라 할 수 있다

if the mind was excited or agirated or in any other states,

there's nothing wroing with that

but your being is not excited

its nature is peace and fulfillment

so if your happiness is invested in something that you expect

to achieve as a result of your excitement,

then you are not yet standing in your being

in other words, if your excitement is propelling you

towards something or someone for the purpose of fulfilling you,

then that excitement is arising in you on behalf of an illusory self

but there can also be an excitement 

that doesn't arise on behalf of an illusory self

that would be fine, nothing wroing with that

if it's excitement, it's either your mind or your body

the space in this room never gets agitated or excited

the people inside it might get agitated or excited

being never gets agitated or excited

you could say that the whole universe is

what the vibration of being looks like

from the perspective of a finite mind

you could say that this whole universe is the activity

of the activity of the infinite being or infinite consciousness looks life

from a localized perspective

항상 (대상인) 무언가를 의식한다

그게 보통이다

생각, 인식, 느낌, 생각인 기억,

그런 무언가를 의식할 뿐 아니라,

그것과 동일시한다

그대가 의식하는 모든 생각과 동일시한다

(생각이 나다)

아무 것 아닌 것을 의식하지는 않는다

그건 말도 안 되는 것이라 생각해서

이제 우리는 이 작은 연습을 소개하고 있다

공간의 광대함, 

또는 가만 있는 것,

그대를 둘러싸고 있는 고요함에 주의를 주는 것

소음이 아니라, 침묵에 주의를 준다

어떤 타입의 음악에 주의를 줄 수도 있다

난 일본 플루트, 대나무 플루트, 사쿠하치를 추천한다

아주 단순한 악기다

사쿠하치의 대가들이 연주할 때,

그대는 쉽게 침묵을 감지할 수 있다

소리 사이의 고요함을

그래서 그대가 소리보다 침묵에 주의를 더 준다

그것에 주의를 줄 때,

무언가를 의식하지 않게 된다

침묵이나 공간이 있지, 아무것도 없기 때문이다

대상이 물러난다

보통은 의식이 대상과 결합되어 있다

그래서 남는 것은

자신을 의식하는 의식

그것이 존재, '나'를 알아차린다 라 하는 것이다

그 순간 의식이 더 이상 무언가를 의식하지 않는다

아무것도 없기 때문이다

의식이 그 자신을 의식한다

인도와 같은 곳에서의 고대 전통에서는

그것을 자신을 본다 라 했다

자신을 본다는 것은, 마음이 만들어낸 자신이 아니다

그것이 깊은 '나' 다

you're always conscious of something

that's normal

you're only conscious of something,

a thought, a sense perception, a feeling,

a memory which is a thought,

you're not only conscious of something, 

you're identified with that thing that you're conscious of

every thought that you are conscious of,

you're identified with it

but you're never conscious of nothing

because you think that doesn't make sense

and now we're introducing this little practice

where you pay attention to the vastness of space

or you pay attention to stillness or silence around you

not the noise, you pay attention to the silence

certain types of music you can do it to

i recommend the japanese flute, bamboo flute,

is a very very simple instrument

and the great masters of sakuhachi,

they play this music, you can sense easily the silence,

the stillness between the sounds

so you pay more attention to the silence than to the sounds

so when you pay attention to that,

you become conscious not of something,

because there's nothing there in the silence, or in the space,

and the object is withdrawn

that normally is associated with consciousness,

all that remains is consciousness that is conscious of itself

and that's the realization of being, i am

consciousness is no longer conscious of something that moment

because there is nothing

consciousness is conscious of itself

and in ancient traditions like in india,

it's called self realization

and self realization is not mind made self

어떤 것에 이름을 붙이려면,

그것을 대상으로 삼아야 한다

존재를 존재라고 하는 것도,

그것에 대헤 주체 - 대상 관계로 서는 것이다

그렇다, 엄격히 말하면

우리는 이 주 내내, 말 없이 있어야 한다

정확하려고만 한다면

이 주 초반을 보면,

그대는 자신을 marcus 라 부르지 않았다,

우리가 그대를 marcus 라 불렀다

그대는 자신을 '나' 라 한다

그래서 marcus 는, 우리가 제 2인의 관점에서, 그대에게 붙이는 이름이다

제1의 사람으로서의 자신의 경험은,

그대가 '나' 라고 하는 것이다

마찬가지다, 우리가 신을 신이라 하는 것은,

제 2 인의 관점에서다

신은 자신을 신이라 하지 않는다

같은 이유로, 그대가 자신을 marcus 라 하지 않는다

신은 자신을 무엇이라 할까, '나'

'나' 가 그 자신이 붙이는, 주체의 이름이므로

존재가, 우리가 존재에게 붙이는 이름인 것도 마찬가지다

제 2인의 관점에서다

존재는 자신이 존재인 것으로 알지 못한다

존재가 자신에 대해 사실인 것을 말한다면,

'나' 라 할 것이다

그래서 사실, 언어의 측면에서

'나' 가 영어에서 가장 정확한 표현이다

그럼에도 완전히 정확한 것은 아니다

실체가 그 자신의 경험을 표현하려는 시도다

그러니 우리는 가능한 정확하게 언어를 사용하거나

아니면 언어의 정확성을 포기하고, 시인이 된다

아무도 시인에게 정확하라 요구하지 않는다

시는 일으키는 것이다, 정확하기 위함이 아니다

in order to name anything, you must objectify it

even to name being being is to stand in subject-object relationship to it

it's true, strictly speaking, we should remain silent all week

we should just sit here in silence all week

if we wanted only to be accurate, 

never to say anything that was not accurate

but the purpose of the teaching is not to be accurate

it's to be efficient

so i use language as best as i can

and as efficiently as i can

and i'm also careful

earlier in the week, you don't call yourself marcus

all of us call you marcus

you call yourself i

so marcus is the name that we give to you from a second person perspective

the first person experience of yourself,

you call that i

likewise, we call god god

from a second person perspective

god would never call itself god for the same reason

that you don't call yourself marcus

what would god call itself? i

because i is the subjective name that gives to itself

likewise, being is the name that we give to being

from a second person point of view

being does not know that it is being

if being were to say something true about itself,

it would not say, being is

it would say, 'i am'

so actually, in terms of language,

'i am' is the most accurate phrase in the english language

it's still not completely accurate

it is an attempt to express reality's experience of itself

so we either use language as accurately as possible

or you abandon the accuracy of language and you become a poet

and no one asks a poet to be accurate

poems are supposed to be evocative, not accurate

그대가 많은 기대를 부르는 위치에 있다,

대부분의 사람들은 그대에게 긍정적이고,

소수는 부정적이다,

그런 건 자연스럽다

그것에 관해 그대가 할 수 있는 것은 없다

4천 명의 기대를 다룰 수 없다

하지만 한 가지에 대처할 수 있다

자신

주의를 기울여야 하는 것은 그것 뿐이다

그들도 그렇겠지만,

그대 안에

분리되어 따로 있는 자신이 있는 것으로 생각하고 있다면

끊임없이,  그들의 칭찬에 부풀어 오르거나, 그들의 비난에  움츠러든다

그러면 삶이 너무 스트레스다

dj 는 그대가 하는 것이다, 그대인 것이 아니다

그대는 무한한, 의식하는 존재다

무한한 의식하는 존재란, 스트레스받지 않는다

그대 안에서 일어나는, 분리되어 따로 있는 자신,

그것이 온갖 기대들을 수용한다

그것이 그들에 의해 우쭐해지거나, 그들에 의해 움츠러든다

그들은 그대를 멋진 dj 라는 이미지로 본다

그들이 그대에 대해 갖는 이미지다

그들 본인들의 정체성을 그대에게 투자하고 있다

그대는 그 이미지를 갖지 마라

안에서,

그냥 이 열려 있음, 의식하는 존재인 것을 본다

그래서 그들의 투사는 그대를 통과할 뿐이다,

그대 안에 머물지 않는다

그것이 '아쉬타바크라 기타' 에서 말하는

칭찬과 비난에 무심하다 는 뜻이다

그대 안에, 칭찬에 의해 우쭐해질 것도, 비난에 의해 움츠러들 것도 없다는 뜻이다

그래서 칭송받거나 비난받거나, 개의치 않는다

if you're in a position that invites a lot of project,

what's important is not whether the other people are projecting on you

most people will project positively on you

a few people will project negatively on you

that's natural

there's nothing you can do about that

you can't manage 4000 people's projection

but you can manage the one thing they are projecting on,

which is yourself

that you do have control over

that's all you need to attend to

so if there is a separate self in you,

they of course think there is,

but if you think there is,

then you're going to feel constantly

either aggrandized by their praise or diminished by their criticism

and life is going to be super stressful

you're infinite aware being

and an infinite aware being never gets upset or stressed

i'ts only the separate self that arises in you

that is receiving all these projections,

that is either being aggrandized by them or diminished by them

if you see clearly that in you which is being the image of yourself

that people have of you that they are projecting,

that they are actually manufactuing,

all that's important is that you don't have that image of yourself

they see this image of amazing dj,

they're investing their own identities in you,

that's why they have to make you into an identity,

in order to substantiate their own identity

but for you, you can see that inside there's just this openness,

aware being, empty aware being

and their projection sail through you,

it doesn't land in you

that's what it means in the spiritual, you see in some texts,

the ashtavakra gita, indifferent to praise and blame

it means there's nothing in you either to be aggrandized by praise

or diminished by blame

so you don't mind being praised or blamed

몸의 느낌이나

감정적 경험이 너무 강해서

자신과의 연결을 잃었다, 

안의 평화와의 연결을 잃었다, 경험적으로

그렇다 해도 본성을 알고는 있는 것은 아주 좋다

느껴지는 것들이 있음에도,

본래 있는 대로의 평화로운 존재로 알고는 있는 것

다른 사람이 있다면, 그들 또한 그런 것으로.

그런 것으로 느껴지지 않는다 해도

이상적인 것은 변함없이,

이해하고, 느끼고, 행동하고, 인식하고,  연결하는 것이지만

일시적으로 감각과 감정이 너무 강해서,

그대가 자신을 잃었다고 하면

본성을 알고 있는 것으로 아주 충분할 것이다

그것이 가능한  빠르게 그대를 되돌린다

첫번째 기회를 잡는다

처음에는, 나의 존재냐 세상이냐 다

서로 둘인, 배타적 가능성들 같다

때가 되면, 그대가 자신과 연결된 채 있을 수 있다

경험이 없는 때 뿐 아니라,

경험 중에도

그때에도, 자신이 더욱 흐르도록 해라

상황의 강도가 높아지고,

고요함은 배경으로 물러나는 때,

상황의 강도가 줄어들고

고요함이 배경에서 나타나, 다시 앞으로 나오는 것 같을 것이다

if a physical sensation or an emotional experience is so intense

that you've lost touch with yourself experientially

with your being, your innate peace,

it would be very good then still to retain the knowledge

that in spite of what you feel and sense,

you are this inherently peaceful being,

if it involves another person, they are that also,

even if you can't feel it

the ideal is to understand, to feel, to act, to perceive,

and to relate in a consistent way

but if temporarily your sensations and or emotions are so intense

that you've lost in them,

it would be very good at least to retain the knowledge of your true nature

that will enable you to go back as quickly as

your circumstances allow to your true nature

you'll take the first opportunity

to begin with, it's either my being or it's the world

they seem to be two mutually exclusive possibilities

in time, you develop the capacity to remain in touch with your being

not just in the absence of experience,

but in the midst of experience

but even then, allow yourself even flow

intensity of your circumstance heighten and being recedes into background

and then the intensity of your circumstance diminishes

and being seems to emerge from background

and come again into the foreground

물질이, 그것이 무엇이든,

그대에게 자유로운 느낌을 주는 것이 있다, 잠시

a substance, whatever can free you of yourself briefly too

but i don't recommend it

but many cannot live without some substance

there's an enourmous pull, longing

what is it that they experience when they take this substance,

whether it's alcohol or other things?

많은 이들이 어떤 물질 없이 살 수 없다

엄청난 끌림, 엄청난 갈망

그들이 이 물질을 들이켤 때, 경험하는 것은 무엇인가

알콜이든, 그 외 다른 것들이든

they experience briefly, nevre last, a sense of self-transcendence

so the substance can briefly free you of yourself

this mindmade thing that you live with,

this problematic sense of i

you take a few drinks and you feel lighter for a while

because it slows down your mind, you can't think that much anymore,

life become somewhat less problematic

그들은 잠시, 변화된 자신의 느낌을 경험한다,

계속가지는 않는다

그 물질이 잠깐 동안, 그대를 자신에게서 벗어나게 한다

짐으로 지고 살던 마음이 만들어낸 것,

문제 있는 느낌의 '나'로부터

몇 잔 마시면, 잠시 동안 가벼움을 느낀다

마음이 느려지기 때문이다

그다지 많이 생각할 수 없다

삶에서 어느 정도 문제가 덜어진다

because if you don't remember your problems, 

they're gone

all you are left with is immediate situation that you

either deal with or don't deal with

but the place where your problem live is in your mind

and they can only exist if you think about them

그대가 그대의 문제를 기억하지 못하기 때문에,

그것들이 사라진다

남은 것은, 대처하든 대처하지 않든, 즉시적인 순간이다

그대의 문제는 그대의 마음에 산다

그래서 그대가 그것들에 대해 생각한다면,

존재할 수 있는 것들일 뿐이다

of course, they refer to situations, that is true

but every situation can be only experienced or faced

or solved or simply accepted in the present moment

nothing ever arises in your life that's not in the present moment

so the present moment you can deal with

start just here now, either you take action or you don't

물론,  그들은 상황에 대해 말한다

그건 사실이다

하지만 모든 상황은,

경험하거나 마주하거나 해결하거나 그냥 받아들이거나,

지금 에서 가능할 뿐이다

그래서 그대가 대처할 수 있는 것은 지금이다

행동을 하거나 하지 않거나

that lives in your mind

and that's an incredible burden to live with

and everybody lives with this burden if they have not awakened

to the deep i

they are trapped in this surface i

it's a terrible prison

하지만 그렇다고 하면,

그대의 마음에 사는

문제 있는 삶의 온갖 것이 떠오른다

그리고 그건 엄청난 짐이다

깊은 '나' 에 깨어나지 않는다면, 이 짐을 모두가 지고 산다

표면 '나' 에 갇혀서

그것은 끔찍한 감옥이다

we're talking about egoic consciousness

when you're identified with a thought completely,

you're in egoic consciousness

the ego is operating in you and pretend to be you

so you are spiritually speaking asleep

에고 의식에 대해 말하고 있다

그대가 생각과 완전히 동일시될 때,

에고 의식에 들어서 있다

에고가 그대 안에서 작동하고, 그대인 척한다

영적으로 말하면, 잠에 빠져 있다
