내내 죽음과 함께 사는 것

오늘 아는 것을 끝낼 수 있는가

목수의 일, 기술적인 것들에 대해 아는 것이 아니라

그대가 져 온 기억, 아는 것을

 

물리적인 세상에서의 어떤 것들을 하기 위해서는 기억을 갖고 있어야 한다

심리적으로는 단 하나의 기억도 지지 마라

단 하나의 상처도

단 하나의 증오의 말도, 증오의 느낌도,

혹은 권력, 지위를 추구하는 것도

 

권력은 악 이다

그것이 정치적 권력이든, 그대의 부인이나 남편에 대해 갖는 힘이든,

어떤 형태의 권력 혹은 권력 근처,

권력 가까이에 있는 것은 악 이다, 흉하다

 

그대는 그것을 심리적으로 끝낼 수 있는가

그것이 내내 죽음과 함께 산다는 뜻이다

아니면 우리는 항상 죽음을 두려워할까

 

진리인 사랑의 아름다움 없이,

얼마나 그대가 명상을 하든, 읽든, 탐구를 하든

의미가 없다

can i live everyday with death?

that means ending my experience everyday

only the memoreis of those experiences, and knowledge,

physically they are necessary

psychologically can i end memories?

that is death

death is going to tell us at the end of our life,

'boy, you can't carry your memories with you'

 

매일 죽음과 함께 살 수 있는가

매일 경험을 끝낸다는 뜻이다

그 경험들에 대한 기억, 아는 것을

물리적으로는 필요하다

심리적으로, 끝낼 수 있는가

그것이 죽음이다

죽음은 우리 삶의 끝에서, '어이, 기억을 갖고 갈 수 없다'라 할 것이다

 

so to live with death all the time

it is a marvellous thing if you do

this is not a reward

because our memoreis are entirely in the brain

and memoreis which are the past are gone, dead

memoreis have no meaning really

but yet we are full of memories, which is our knoelege

 

내내 죽음과 함께 사는 것

그것은 놀라운 것이다, 그대가 그렇게 한다면

 

보상이 아니다

왜냐하면 우리 기억은 다 뇌에 있다

과거인 기억은 지나갔다, 죽었다

기억에는 정말로 의미가 없다

하지만 그럼에도 우리는 우리가 아는 것, 기억들로 가득 차 있다

 

can you end knowledge today?

not the knowledge of doing carpentry and technological things,

but the momories, the knowledge that you have carried

you have to have momories to do cetain things in the physical world

psychologically don't carry a single memory

not a single hurt

not a word of hate or the feeling of hate,

or seeking power, position

 

오늘 아는 것을 끝낼 수 있는가

power is evil

whether it is a political power or the power you have over your wife or husband

any form of power or near power, being near a power is evil, ugly

and can you end all that psychologically?

that means to live with death all the time

or will we always afraid of death?

 

권력은 악 이다

그것이 정치적 권력이든, 그대의 부인이나 남편에 대해 갖는 힘이든,

어떤 형태의 권력 혹은 권력 근처,

권력 가까이에 있는 것은 악 이다, 흉하다

그대는 그것을 심리적으로 끝낼 수 있는가

그것이 내내 죽음과 함께 산다는 뜻이다

아니면 우리는 항상 죽음을 두려워할까

 

this brings about another question

death and love go together

death is not memory, love is not memory

nor pleasure, it's the ending of desire

the ending of thought, that is love

therefore death and love go together

 

이것은 또 다른 질문을 일으킨다

죽음과 사랑은 함께 간다

죽음은 기억이 아니다, 사랑은 기억이 아니다

즐거움도 아니다, 욕망의 끝이다

생각의 끝이다, 그것이 사랑이다

그래서 죽음과 사랑은 함께 간다

 

have you ever inquired what love is?

give your heart to find out

because you have lost that quality in this country

when you talk about love, you become vacant, you don't know what it means

if you love your children, there will be no war

 

사랑이 무엇인지 탐구해 본 적 있는가

발견하는데 그대의 가슴을 내라

왜냐하면 그 특질을 잃었다, 이 나라에서

사랑에 대해 말할 때, 공허하다, 그것이 무슨 뜻인지 모른다

그대가 그대의 아이들을 사랑한다면, 전쟁은 없을 것이다

 

inquire, not intellecutally, analytically

the word inquire we use as watching, listening, observing

what is love?

is it put together by thought?

or is love something entirely different from desire, memory, thought?

 

조사해라, 지적으로가 아니라, 분석적으로가 아니라

조사한다 란, 우리가 바라본다, 귀 기울여 듣는다, 관찰한다 로 사용하는 말이다

사랑이 무엇인가

생각에 의해 모아진 것인가

아니면 욕망, 기억, 생각과 완전히 다른 무언가인가

 

and without the beauty of love which is truth,

any amount of your meditation, reading,  or searching has not meaning

 

진리인 사랑의 아름다움 없이,

얼마나 그대가 명상을 하든, 읽든, 탐구를 하든

의미가 없다

 

never be envious

which is to compare yourself with another

can you end that comparison and that envy?

if you cannot, there can be no love

if you are ambitious, seeking your own fulfillment, your own success,

your own power, all that,

that denies completely love

 

결코 부러워하지 마라

그것은 그대 자신과 다른 이들을 비교하는 것이다

그 비교와 부러움을 끝낼 수 있는가

그럴 수 없다면, 사랑은 있을 수 없다

그대에게 야망이 있고, 그대 자신의 이룰 것, 성공, 권력, 그런 모든 것을 쫓는다면

그것은 사랑을 완전히 부인하는 것이다
