아름다움은 무엇인가

뭔가 평범하지 않고 굉장한, 놀라운, 멋진 것을 볼 때

그것에 대한 그대의 대응은 무엇인가

얼마나 뛰어난가, 얼마나 아름다운가 라 말하고,

차 마시러 가자 인가

we have made the external as so-called beautiful as possible

if you see an aeroplane, it is really extraordinarily beautiful

or a diamond, or a marvellous bridge expanding vast waters

so is that beauty?

우리는 외부적으로 아름답다 하는 것을 만들어 왔다

비행기를 본다, 정말로 뛰어나게 아름답다

혹은 다이아몬드나 넓은 물에 뻗어 있는 멋진 다리

 

그것이 아름다움인가

 

부분적으로는

 

when you see a mountain against a blue sky, 

the shadows, the valley, rivers,

that is an astonishing sight

so one asks, what is beauty?

 

하늘에 대비되어 있는 산을 본다,

그 그늘, 골짜기, 강,

그런 것은 놀라운 광경이다

 

그래서 아름다움은 무엇인가

 

is there beauty without having inner beauty?

we will go into the word 'beauty' presently

you may have a beautiful face, body, proportion, good eyes and all the rest of it

and the external beauty of a person is nice, attractive, pleasant

and is that beauty?

without understanding the depth and the meaning of beauty?

 

안의 아름다움 없이 아름다움이 있는가

우리는 지금 아름다움 이라는 말로 들어선다

그대가 아름다운 얼굴, 몸, 비율, 눈, 그밖에 모든 것을 가졌을 수 있다

어떤 사람의 외부적 아름다움은 좋고, 매력적이고, 기분 좋을 수 있다

그것이 아름다움인가

아름다움의 깊이와 의미의 이해 없이

 

what is beauty?

is is only in the external world?

and can there be beauty in the external world without understanding the beauty of life in oneself?

 

아름다움은 무엇인가

외부 세상에만 있는 것인가

그리고 자신 안 삶의 아름다움을 이해하지 않고, 외부 세상에 아름다움이 있을 수 있을까

 

so we are enquiring together

not according to the magazines

not what the artistic authorities say what beauty is

but to understand for ourselves the nature of beauty

because without that, love cannot be

 

우리는 함께 조사 중이다

잡지에 의해서가 아니라,

예술적 권위자들이 아름다움이 무엇인지 말하는 것에 의해서가 아니라

아름다움의 본성을 우리 자신이 이해하는 것이다

왜냐하면 그것 없이, 사랑은 있을 수 없다

 

has beauty a cause?

as love has no cause, as intelligence has no cause,

has beauty a cause?

 

아름다움에는 원인이 있는가

사랑에는, 지성에는 원인이 없듯

아름다움에 원인이 있는가

 

when you see something extraordinarily great, marvellous, majestic,

what is your response to it?

you say, how extraordinary, how beautiful that is,

let's go and have tea
