아름다움을 본다는 것은

 

 

그대 가슴에 아름다움이 없다면, 결코 진리를 갖지 못할 것이다

그 놀라운 단어, 그 단어의 깊이를 떠올리지 못할 것이다

if we don't understand or have that quality of beauty,

because beauty is truth

without beauty, there is no truth

and if there is no beauty in your heart, you will never have truth

you will never come upon that marvellous word,

and the depth of that word

 

아름다움을 이해하지 못하거나

아름다움의 특질을 갖고 있지 않다면,

왜냐하면 아름다움은 진리다

아름다움 없이, 진리는 없다

not the beauty of a dress

but what is beauty?

if you ask it seriously, 

not what the poets say

not the books that have been written about beauty

or read one of the great poems and feel exalted,

and say, what a beautiful thing that is

 

옷의 아름다움이 아니다

무엇이 아름다움인가

그대가 진지하게 묻는다면

 

시가 말하는 것이 아니라

아름다움에 대해 쓰여진 책이 아니라

위대한 시 중 하나를 읽고, 고귀함을 느끼고, '와 얼마나 아름다운지'라 하는 것이 아니라

 

is that beauty? 그것이 아름다움인가

 

is it sensory responses of seeing a beautiful person,

and merely getting excited sexually

or because he is important in the world and earns a lot of money,

a cenema person?

i don't like to call them stars because 

politically they have become important

and so you are also encouraging this,

inane actors who are just a face and a body, with very little behind it

 

아름다운 사람을 보고 감각적으로 느껴지는 것인가

그리고 단지 성적으로 흥분되는 것인가

혹은 세상에서 중요한 사람이고, 많은 돈을 벌어서

영화 배우라서

 

난 그들을 스타라고 부르고 싶지도 않다

정치적으로 그들은 중요하게 되었다

 

그리고 그대들 또한 이런 것을 응원한다

단지 얼굴과 몸인, 공허한 배우들

그 뒤에 있는 것이 거의 없는

 

so to enquire into beauty,

one must understand or grasp,

not intellectually

 

그래서 아름다움을 들여다 본다는 것은

이해해야 한다, 파악해야 한다

지적으로가 아니라
