누가 결정을 할까

 

 

주방으로 가서, 주방인 분리되어 있는 공간을 찾는 것과 같다

테이블, 의자, 단지, 팬은 본다

하지만 나의 주방이라 하는, 분리되어 있는- 제한되어 있는 공간을 찾는다면

그 공간은 찾지 못한다

우리가 보는 것은, 우주의 광대한 공간이다

somebody says to you, 'would like tea or coffee?'

and your mind says, 'tea'

a decision has been made

now who made that decision?

 

누군가가 말한다, '차 마실래, 커피 마실래?'

그리고 '차'라고 한다

선택이 됐다

 

누가 그 결정을 했는가

 

when you say, 'i would like tea'

you can find the thought

but if you look for the self, the entity, the mind that made that decision,

we don't find an entity there

 

'난 차 마시고 싶다'라 할 때

그 생각은 볼 수 있다

하지만 그 결정을 내린 자신, 존재, 마음을 찾는다면

찾지 못한다

 

as a concession, we can say that the finite mind makes the decision

however if we look for the finite mind, we don't find it

it's like going into your kitchen and looking for the separate space that is your kitchen

you find the tables and chairs and pots and pans

but if you look for the separate limited space called my kitchen,

you never find that space

all we find is the vast space of the universe

 

제한되어 있는 마음이 결정을 한다 라 할 수도 있다

하지만 제한되어 있는 마음을 찾는다면, 그것을 발견하지 못한다

 

주방으로 가서, 주방인 분리되어 있는 공간을 찾는 것과 같다

테이블, 의자, 단지, 팬은 본다

하지만 나의 주방이라 하는, 분리되어 있는- 제한되어 있는 공간을 찾는다면

그 공간은 찾지 못한다

우리가 보는 것은, 우주의 광대한 공간이다

 

so when we say it's the finite mind that makes the decision,

we are making a concession to the belief that there is an individual finite mind

strictly speaking, there isn't

 

그래서, 결정을 하는 것은 제한되어 있는 마음이다 라 할 때

개별적으로 제한되어 있는 마음이 있다는 걸로 한다

엄격하게 말하면 없다

 

can we say that consciousness makes the choice?

ultimately we could attribute the choice to conscioiusness,

but consciousness is not there making choices

it's spontaneous

we can't really answer the question

there is no satisfactory answer

 

의식이 결정을 한다 라 할 수 있을까

궁극적으로는 의식이 한다 라 할 수도 있다

하지만 의식이 있고, 그것이 선택을 하는 것이 아니다

즉시적이다

 

우리는 그 질문에 정말로는 답할 수 없다

만족스러운 답은 없다

 

because even the question itself is predicated on a misunderstanding

namely that there is somewhere a separate entity that might make a choice

so the highest ansser is that there is no answer to that question

but for many of us, we are not satisfied with that answer

so the teaching comes down off the top of the mountain,

and will say, 'oh mind makes the choice or consciosness makes the choice or'

that's also legitimate

 

왜냐하면 그 질문조차 오해에 근거해 단정된 것이므로

어딘가에 선택을 할 수 있을, 분리되어 있는 존재가 있다 라고

 

그래서 가장 높은 답은,

그 질문에 답은 없다

 

하지만 우리들 많은 이들이 그 답에 만족하지 않는다

그래서 가르침은 산꼭대기에서 내려온다

그리고 '아 마음이 결정을 한다거나 의식을 결정을 한다거나'라 할 것이다

그것 또한 그럴 만한다

 

in other words the question is undermined rather than answered

 

다른 말로 하면, 질문에 답이 나온다기보다, 질문이 파고들어지는 것이다
