영감은 시간 밖에서 온다

william turner를 떠올려 보면

 

그는 hamstead heath 를 그리고 있었다

스튜디오로 돌아왔다

마을 사람 중 하나를 만났다

그에게 turner가 그림을 보여주었다

그가 말했다,

'turner, 난 40년 동안 이 마을에 살아왔지만, 이런 광경은 본 적이 없다'

 

그 말에 turner가 대답했다

'하지만 보길 바라던 것 아닌가'

the horizontal flow of time on which our experience takes place,

thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions and so on

and then i suggested that being or awareness, 

didn't exist on a horizontal flow of time,

it was on the verical axis of being, the eternal now

 

우리 경험이 일어나는 수평적 시간의 흐름,

생각, 느낌, 감각, 인식 등

 

그리고 내가 말한,

존재 혹은 자각,

시간의 수평적 흐름에 있지 않던

존재, 영원한 흐름의 수직축에 있던 것

 

creativity involves bringing something new into existence

it's not just an extension, 

it's not just a reproduction of the past

 

창조성은 새로운 것을 존재로 들여오는 것과 관련된다

단지 연장이 아니라

과거의 재생산이 아니라

 

plenty of design is the extension of the past

and there's nothing wrong with that

the past is extended or it evolves along a line of time

 

많은 디자인이 과거의 확장이다

그것에 잘못된 것은 없다

과거가 확장되거나, 시간 선을 따라 진화한 것이다

 

but creativity is something different

creativity is when something enters the horizontal line of time from this vertical axis of being

and that's true creativity

true creativity bring something new into existence fro humanity

rather than just an extension of the past into the future

 

하지만 창조성은 다른 것이다

창조성은,

존재의 수직축에서, 

수평적 시간선으로 무언가가 들어서는 때다

그것이 진짜 창조성이다

 

진짜 창조성은

인류를 위해, 새로운 것을 존재로 들여온다

단지 과거에서 미래로 뻗어나가는 것이 아니라

 

of course, as an aritist you need to study and practice,

you need to develop your craft

that all takes place on the line of time

but the inspiration comes from outside time, comes from another dimension

 

물론 예술가로서 공부하고 단련해야 한다

기술을 성장시켜야 한다

그런 모든 것이 시간선에서 일어난다

 

하지만 영감은,

시간 밖에서 온다

다른 차원에서 온다

 

you walk out on the beach and the way you see the landscape,

it's not just an extension of your past conditioning

something has intervened, there's been a break in the flow of your experience

 

그대가 해변을 걷는다,

풍경을 보는 방식이

보던 대로가 아니다

무언가가 들어선다

그대 경험의 흐름이 중단된다

 

'my mind came to an end'

 

'내 마음이 끝장났다'

 

the normal flow of experience was interrupted

something new came in

 

대개 경험하는 흐름에

뭔가 새로운 것이 들어선다

 

remember william turner was painting on hamstead heath

and he came back to his studio

and he met one of local residents

turner showed him the painting

and he said, 'mr. turner, i've lived on hamstead heath for 40 years, but i've never seen a view like that on hamstead heath'

to which turner responed, 'no, but don't you wish you could?'

'i want my viewers to have a taste of nature's eternity'

he wanted to give people a taste of nature's eternity

 

세잔 은 사실 그런 것에 관해 노골적이었다

'난 내 그림을 보는 이들이 자연의 영원성을 맛보기를 원한다'

그는 사람들에게 자연의 영원성의 맛을 보여주기를 원했다
