해 는 빛나지 않을 수 없다

그대는, '난 내가 의식하고 있다는 것을 의식한다'를 알아차리고 있다

바로 그곳, 그것이 의식이다, 의식이 그 자신을 아는 것이다

 

의식과 관련해서 특별하거나 신비로운 것 없다

가장 명백하고 가까운, 친밀한 경험이다

우리가 그것을 경험이라 할 수 있다면

 

의식은 내내 그 자신을 알고 있다

그 자신을 알지 않을 수 없다

같은 이유로, 해 는 그 자신을 빛내지 않을 수 없다

그것의 본성이 빛나는 것이다

의식의 본성은 아는 것이다, 그 자신을 알지 않을 수 없다

언제나,

영원히 알고 있다, 혹은 그 자신을 빛내고 있다

 

단 그 자신에 대한 앎이

대부분 다른 것들에 대해 아는 것과 뒤섞이면,

그 자신을 무시하거나 잊곤 한다

 

하지만 의식이 완전히, 세상에 대해 아는 것에 잠겨 있다 해도

그럼에도 그 자신을 알고 있다

그 자신에 대한 앎이, 그 자신을 모르는 것 같아 보이는 배경으로 아주 멀리 물러나 보이더라도

 

그대, 자각 은

영원히 그대 자신을 의식한다

you don't need to remember what the experience of consciousness is

because you are now having the experiernce of being aware

if you have to remember your breakfast, you have to go to your memory

because breakfast is not present now

 

의식을 경험하는 것이 무엇인지 기억할 필요 없다

지금 의식하는 경험 중이므로

 

아침 식사를 기억해야 한다면, 기억으로 가야 한다

지금 있는 것이 아니므로

 

and nor can we remember that experience

because memory takes place in the finite mind

and everything that finite mind knows is conditioned by the limitations of the finite mind

so you cannot remember consicousness

because all memories are by definition temporary and finite

so it's impossible to remember consciousness 

or to see consciousness or to know consciousness

with the finite mind

 

그리고 의식을 경험한 것을 기억할 수도 없다

기억이란, 제한되어 있는 마음에서 일어난다

제한된 마음이 아는 것은 모두, 제한된 마음의 한계에 의한 상태들이다

 

그래서 그대는 의식을 기억할 수 없다

기억이라고 하는 것은 모두, 일시적이고 제한된 것이다

그래서 제한된 마음으로, 의식을 기억하는 것은 불가능하다

혹은 의식을 보거나 아는 것은

 

but we don't need to

because consciousness is self luminous

the sun, it illuminates itself, it knows itself, just by being itself

you are now having the experience of being aware

what do you think of having experience of being aware?

whatever it is having the experience of being aware,

must itself be aware

 

그럴 필요도 없다

의식은 자신이 빛나므로

해 는, 그 자신을 빛나게 한다, 그 자신을 안다, 단지 그 자신인 것으로

그대는 지금 의식하고 있는 경험을 하고 있다

의식하는 경험이 무엇이라 생각하는가

의식을 경험하는 그것이 무엇이든, 그것이 의식해야 한다

 

you're acknowledging that 'i am aware that i am aware'

right there, that is consciousness is knowledge of itself

there's nothing extraordinary or mystical about it

it's the most obvious intimate familiar experience there

if we can call it an experience there is

consciousness is knowing itself all the time

consciousness cannot not know itself

for the same reason that the sun cannot not illuminate itself

its nature is illumination

consciousness's nature is knowing, it cannot not know itself

it always, it's eternally knowing or illuminating itself

 

의식은 내내 그 자신을 알고 있다

그 자신을 알지 않을 수 없다

같은 이유로, 해 는 그 자신을 빛내지 않을 수 없다

그것의 본성이 빛나는 것이다

의식의 본성은 아는 것이다, 그 자신을 알지 않을 수 없다

언제나,

영원히 알고 있다, 혹은 그 자신을 빛내고 있다

 

only its knowledge of itself is mixed up most of the time

with its knowledge of other things

and therefore it tends to overlook or forget itself

but even when consciousness is totally immersed in its knowledge of the world,

it is still knowing itself

although its knowledge of itself has receded so far into the background

that it seems not to know itself

 

단 그 자신에 대한 앎이
