진실로 우리인 것은, 진실로 세상인 것이어야 한다

 

그래서 우리는 두 가지 가능성을 갖는다

우리 자신을 탐험하거나, 세상을 탐험하거나

'우린 둘 다를 통해 실체로 갈 수 있겠다'라 할 수도 있다

하지만 그럴 수 없다

세상에 대해 우리가 아는 것은, 감각 인식을 매개해서일 뿐이다

그래서 세상을 연구하는 것으로 실체로 갈 수는 없다

by looking into that aspect of your experience,

that is not touched by what is taking place in the world

not only in the external world

but is not also touched by your interior world of your thoughts and feelings

 

그대 경험 중, 

세상에서 일어나고 있는 것에 의해 닿아지지 않는 그 측면,

외부의 세상 뿐 아니라

생각과 느낌의 그대 안 세상에 의해서도 닿아지지 않는 것

그것을 조사하는 것이다

 

if you look for it in the world, then 

the truth is always going to be relative, shifting and changing

but the only place to look for the absolute truth

must be that aspect of your experience that is not mediated through the finite mind

everything we know through the finite mind is relative

 

그것을 세상에서 찾는다면

진리는 항상 상대적이고, 변할 것이다

 

절대 진리를 찾을 수 있는 유일한 곳은

유한한 마음을 매개로 하지 않는 경험의 측면이어야 한다

유한한 마음을 통해 우리가 아는 모든 것이 상대적이다

 

that's really what we do here

is there a reality that is not subjected to the limitations of the finite mind?

it doesn't appear in accordance with the limitations of thoughts and perception

because whatever we are must be what the world is

whatever a wave, what is essential is must be what the ocean essentially is

whatever we truly are must be what the world truly is

 

그것이 우리가 여기에서 하고 있는 것이다

'유한한 마음의 제한들에 의해 변하지 않는 실체가 있는가'

그것은 생각과 인식의 제한들 따라 나타나지 않는다

 

우리인 것이 무엇이든, 세상인 것이어야 한다

무슨 파도이든, 본질은, 본질적으로 바다인 것이어야 한다

진실로 우리인 것은, 진실로 세상인 것이어야 한다

 

so we've got two possibilities

either to explore our self or to explore the world

you might say, 'we could go to reality through either'

but no we can't

because our only knowledge of the world is mediated through sense perception

so we can't get to reality by studying the world

 

그래서 우리는 두 가지 가능성을 갖는다

우리 자신을 탐험하거나, 세상을 탐험하거나

'우린 둘 다를 통해 실체로 갈 수 있겠다'라 할 수도 있다

하지만 그럴 수 없다

세상에 대해 우리가 아는 것은, 감각 인식을 매개해서일 뿐이다

그래서 세상을 연구하는 것으로 실체로 갈 수는 없다

 

it's why any physicisits who wants to know the nature of reality,

must sooner or later become a mystic

you can't get to reality through sense perception

it's like scientist trying to investigate white snow whilst wearing orange tinted glasses

it's not possible to see the snow as it is in itself,

when you're wearing orange tinted glasses

it's not possible to know the reality of the world

 

그래서 실체의 본성을 알고 싶은 물리학자들은

곧 신비주의자가 되어야 한다

 

감각 인식을 통해 실체에 이를 수 없다

그건 과학자들이, 오렌지 색 안경을 쓰고 하얀 눈을 조사하려 하는 것과 같다

오렌지 색 안경을 쓰고는, 눈을 본래대로 볼 수 없다

세상의 실체를 아는 것이 불가능하다

 

not the appearance of the world

the reality of the world as it truly is, what it is in itself

so it would only be possible to know the reality of anything,

if we had a direct access that was not mediated through lends of sense perception

 

세상의 모습이 아니라

진실로 그것인 대로의 세상의 실체, 본래 그것인 것

그래서 감각 인식을 매개로 하지 않는, 바로 가는 접근일 때에만

어떤 것이든 그것의 실체를 아는 것이 가능하다

 

is there any experience that we have

that is direct, immediate, unmediated,

only that would be absolute knowledge

 

우리 경험 중,

바로 그것인, 즉시의 것인, 매개하지 않은 것이 있는가

오로지 그것만이 절대 앎일 것이다

 

we understand we can't go to reality through the world

but then only other option is to go into our self?

all our feelings, sensations, thoughts,

these are all mediated through our finite mind

so they are also limited, temporary, finite

 

우리가 세상을 통해 실체로 갈 수 없다는 것을 이해한다

하지만 유일한 대안은 우리 자신으로 들어서는 것인가

우리 모든 느낌, 감각, 생각,

이런 모든 것들은 유한한 마음을 매개로 한다

그래서 그것들 또한 제한되고, 일시적이고, 유한하다

 

but there is one experience we have

which is that direct knowing of being,

which is not subjected to the limitations of thoughts and perception

and that is our fundamental experience of our self

you can't go further back in your experience than the awareness of being

 

하지만 우리가 하는 하나의 경험이 있다

존재, 바로가는 그 앎

생각과 인식에 따라 변하지 않는 것

그것이 우리 자신의 근본 경험이다

존재의 자각 이상의 경험으로 물러날 수 없다

 

that's why the awareness of being is the only way

we can discover the nature of reality

it's the only experirence that is not mediated through a finite mind

 

그래서 존재의 자각이

우리가 실체의 본성을 발견할 수 있는 유일한 길이다

그것이 유한한 마음을 매개로 하지 않는 유일한 경험이다
