are you all familiar with my analogy of turner's moon?

imagine a water color by william turner, the english painter

and it's a watercolor of an english landscape at mignight

it's all dark, but it's full moon

 

turner 의 달 의 비유에 익숙한가

영국 화가 william turner 의 수채화 를 떠올려보자

밤 영국의 풍경

 

온통 어두운데, 보름달이다

 

when you look at the painting from a distance,

it looks as if the moon is just one more object in the landscape

but when you go close up to the painting, 

you see that the moon is the only part of the painting that has not been painted

it's the white paper

 

그림을 멀리서 보면

달도 풍경 중 한 대상처럼 보인다

하지만 그림 가까이 가 보면,

달이, 칠해지지 않은 부분일 뿐이라는 것을 본다

하얀 종이다

 

it appears to be an object in the painting, the full moon

but it's not, it's a gap in the painting

through which the reality of the painting shines

 

그림의 한 대상처럼 보이는, 보름달

하지만 그렇지 않다, 그림의 틈이다

그것을 통해, 그림의 실체가 빛난다

 

so the knowledge i am is the turner's moon

the knowledge i am seems to be an experience in the mind

like the knowledge of any other experiences i have

- sadness, hunger, thirst, excitement,

it just seems to be one more experience

that alternates with all other experiences

 

나 라는 앎은 turner 의 달이다

나 라는 앎은, 마음에 있는 하나의 경험처럼 보인다

내게 있는 여느 다른 경험들처럼

- 슬픔, 배고픔, 목마름, 흥분

 

다른 경험들로 대체되는, 하나 더해지는 경험 같다

 

but when we go deeply into the experience i am,

we actually go out of the mind

as mind goes deeply into the i am, it goes out of itself

just like when we go deeply into the full moon in the painting,

we actually go out of the painting into its background or its reality

 

하지만 나 라는 경험으로 가까이 들어서면

사실 마음 밖으로 나간다

마음이 나 로 깊이 들어설수록, 마음은 그 자신 밖으로 나간다

 

우리가 그림의 보름달로 깊이 들어서는 것과 마찬가지다

그림 밖으로 나간다, 그림의 배경으로 혹은 그림의 실체로

 

and the i am is like the full moon

it seems to be in the mind

when we go into it, it's a gap in the mind

it's a portal in the mind through which we pass out to the limitations of the mind,

to our reality, pure being, infinite being, the white paper

 

나 는 보름달과 같다

나 는 마음에 있는 것처럼 보인다 

우리가 그것으로 들어설 때, 그것은 마음 사이 틈이다

마음에서 그것을 통해, 마음의 한게를 지나가고,

실체, 순수 존재, 무한한 존재, 하얀 종이로 가는 입구다

 

which is not only the reality of our mind

but is the background of the entier universe

but it shines most brightly in the knowledge i am, the awareness of being

 

그것은 우리 마음의 실체일 뿐 아니라

온 우주의 배경이다

나 라고 아는 것으로 가장 밝게 빛나는,

존재의 자각이다
