실용적이란

우리 모두가 공유하는 존재는

우리의 믿음들, 피부색, 국적 등등과 상관 없다

 

그래서 이 이해가 결코 비실용적이 아닌 것으로,

나는, 가장 필수적이고, 가장 실용적이고,

알아차릴 수 있을 가장 중요한 것으로 느낀다

 

언젠가

정치인이 일어서서,

자기 나라를 대표해서가 아니라,

우리 모두가 공유하는 존재를 대표해 말하기를 고대한다

sometimes i hear criticisims of this approach,

complains that it is too intellectual, too removed from everyday experience,

not involved enough with politics and so on

 

이 접근에 대해

난 이따금 비판, 불평을 듣곤 한다,

너무 지적이다, 일상 경험에서 너무 물러나 있다,

정치에 충분히 참여하지 않는다, 등등

 

but i think it is rather the opposite

i don't just mean my experience of it,

the numerous different expressions of this understanding,

either in this tradition or in other traditons

is humanity's only hope

the unity of being must be the foundation

on which any just and peaceful society must be based

 

하지만 난 오히려 그 반대라고 생각한다

단지 나의 경험을 말하는 것이 아니다

이 이해에 관한, 셀 수 없이 많은 다양한 표현들이,

이 전통에서든, 다른 전통들에서든,

이 이해가 인류의 유일한 희망이다

존재의 하나임, 그것을 근거로

공정하고 평화로운 사회가 세워져야 한다

 

peace that is based on anything other than this unity of being

is at best a fragile peace,

a fragile alliance between warring communities and nations

of course, sooner or later there will be ceasefires

in the wars that are currently going on 

but they will be temporary ceasefires

the wars will start up again

it'll go on and on like that

 

존재의 하나임 외 다른 것에 근거한 평화는

잘해야 깨지기 쉬운 평화다,

싸우고 있는 공동체들과 나라들 사이의, 취약한 동맹이다

 

물론 지금 진행 중인 전쟁들에 중단이 있을 것이다

하지만 일시적 중단으로

다시 시작할 것이다

그런 식으로 계속 갈 것이다

 

until our culture is founded on rhe recognition of our shared being

the being that we all share, irrespective of our beliefs,

the color of our skins, our natioonality and so on

 

우리 문화가, 

우리가 존재를 나누고 있다는 이해에 근거해 세워질 때까지

 

우리 모두가 공유하는 존재는

우리의 믿음들, 피부색, 국적 등등과 상관 없다

 

so far from being impractical, 

i feel this understanding is the most imperative, the most practical,

the most important thing that one could ever come to know or realize

i look forward to when a politician one day stands up and speaks,

not on behalf of his country,

but on behalf of being we all share

 

그래서 이 이해가 결코 비실용적이 아닌 것으로,

나는, 가장 필수적이고, 가장 실용적이고,

알아차릴 수 있을 가장 중요한 것으로 느낀다

 

언젠가

정치인이 일어서서,
