you look into some people's eyes,

you can project an emotion with your eyes,

therefore you can stir an emotion in another person,

an emotion of fear or sweetness or

 

사람들의 눈을 본다,

그대의 눈으로 감정을 투사한다,

그렇게 해서 다른 사람에게서 감정을 움직이게 할 수 있다

두려움의 감정이거나 달콤함이거나

 

but sometimes someones looks into your eyes,

with a quality of penetration that has no emotion in it

it's so unemotional, but so present

that it doesn't take you to an emotioin in yourself,

it takes you to your true nature

 

하지만 때로는

누군가 그대의 눈을 본다,

그 안에 감정 없는, 꿰뚫는 특질,

너무나 감정적이지 않다, 하지만 아주 존재한다

그대 안 감정으로 그대를 데려가지 않는다

그대의 진짜 본성으로 데려간다

 

it's like they're not looking, they're not interested in what you're feeling,

they're not interested in what your name is,

they're not gazing longingly

it can almost feel cold, but it's not cold

it's not cold, but it's not warm

it's just like penetrating

 

그들은 보고 있지 않는 것 같다

그대가 무엇을 느끼는지, 그대의 이름이 무엇인지에 관심 없다

갈구하며 바라보지 않는다

거의 차갑게 느껴진다

하지만 차갑지 않다

하지만 따듯하지 않다

그냥 관통과 같다

 

many people trun away when they're faced

because they're taken into places in themselves

they're taken to their true nature, it's uncomfortable

there's no emotion there, there's no person there,

their mind cannot bear it, so you look away

 

많은 사람들이 그렇게 마주할 때, 시선을 돌린다

그들 안 자리로 데려가지기 때문이다

그들의 진짜 본성으로 데려가진다, 그것이 불편하다

감정 없다, 어떤 사람 없다,

그들의 마음은 그것을 견딜 수 없다, 그래서 눈을 돌려버린다

 

but i think we all know what it's like to be looked at in this way

you are taken into place where you are no longer you

that's why sometimes you have an image of a teacher, 'ramana maharshi' or

there's something about the gaze

you can't turn away from it

it doesn't take you to an emotion

you don't feel liked or disliked

you don't feel seen as a person, you feel seen through

but it holds you

you're taken to your true nature just in a gaze

 

하지만 우리 모두, 그런 식으로 보여지는 것이 어떤지 알 것이라 생각한다

그대가 더 이상 그대가 아닌 곳으로 데려가진다

그래서 그대가 때로는 스승의 이미지를 갖고 있다

그것에서 눈을 돌릴 수 없다

그대를 감정으로 데려가지 않는다

그대를 좋아한다거나 싫어한다로 느껴지지 않는다

어떤 사람으로 보여지는 것으로 느껴지지 않는다

뚦어 보여지는 느낌이다

 

하지만 그것이 그대를 붙든다

단지 바라봄에, 그대가 그대의 진짜 본성으로 데려가진다
