시간, 기억이 아닌 수직적 개입

한 작곡가가 있다

그가 어느 날 길을 걷고 있었다

누군가가 그와 마주쳐 말했다, '당신 그 분 아닌가'

 

그 작곡가가 말했다, 'yes, 그런 사람 있었어야겠다'

he was walking on the street one day

and someone came up to him and said, 'excuse me, are you mr.?'

he said, 'yes, somebody had to be

the mind can be used just as an extension on a horizontal line of time

this is the kind of normal use of the mind

but then there can be a vertical intervention in the mind

which interrupts the horizontal stream of

where one thought just evolve into another 

there can be this vertical intervention,

which comes from a different dimension, not the dimension of time,

not the dimension of memory

 

마음은

수평선상 시간의 확장으로 사용될 수 있다

이것이 보통 사용되는 방식이랄 수 있다

 

하지만 마음에, 수직적 개입이 들어설 수 있다

한 생각에서 다른 생각으로 나아가는 수평선상 흐름에 들어서는,

수직적 개입

다른 차원에서 온다

시간의 차원이 아니다

기억의 차원이 아니다

 

that vertical intervention is creativity

when something new comes into the mind,

which is not just an extension of the past,

it comes as it were directly from awareness,

directly from the source of the mind

it's not just a continuation of the mind

 

그런 수직적 개입이 창조성이다

새로운 것이 마음에 들어설 때

그냥 과거의 확장이 아닌 것

자각에서 바로 오듯 온다

마음의 근원에서 직접

 

그건 마음의 연속성이 아니다

 

although the language that i used was borrowed from my past language,

but the understanding was a new understanding

it didn't come from thinking

it's what inspiration is

the spirit interferes with the horizontal line of thinking

that the mind is inspired

this new insight

 

내가 사용하는 언어는 나의 과거 언어에서 가져오지만

이해가 새롭다

생각에서 오지 않았다

그것이 영감이라는 것이다

얼 이 생각의 수평선상에 개입한다

마음이 영감을 받는다

이것이 통찰이다

 

it just came to me out of the blue and i spoke it,

i didn't think it, i couldn't have worked it out

what is it that made my mind just the right shape in that moment

to receive this inspired thought?

that's fashioned in my mind in a very paricular way

that's why the thought dropped into my mind and not your mind

i'm sure you also have inspired thoughts that i would never have

because of the way your mind has been formed

 

느닷없이 나타난다,

그리고 내가 그것을 말한다

내가 생각한 것이 아니다

난 그렇게 해결할 수 없었다

 

그 순간에 영감을 받을 수 있도록

무엇이 나의 마음을 그렇게 만들었을까

 

아주 특정한 식으로 형성되어 온 나의 마음

그래서 그 생각이 나의 마음에 떨어졌다, 그대의 마음이 아니라

그대 또한 내가 가진 적 없는 영감 받은 생각을 가졌을 것이다

그대의 마음이 형성된 그 방식 때문에

this new understanding was humanity, 

was ready for this new understanding

but it had to be given to humanity through somebody's mind

and somebody's mind had to be the right shape for it

 

이 새로운 이해,

인류가 이 새로운 이해에 준비되었다,

하지만 누군가의 마음을 통해 인류에게 주어져야 했다

그리고 누군가의 마음이 그것에 적합한 모양이었다

 

so such a beautiful answer, so humble

so the creativity is the conjunction between the horizontal flow of our minds,

the way our minds have been shaped over the years,

combined with this vertical intervention, this inspiration

it's the conjunction of the two that makes this

this new piece of music, this new idea, this new scientic discovery

it has to be both

 

그토록 아름다운 답변,

너무나 겸손한

 

그래서 창조성은

우리 마음의 수평선상 흐름, 수 년 동안 형성되어 온 방식의 우리 마음과

이 수직적 개입, 이 영감이 결합된 것이다

둘이 만들어낸다
