이 이해에 노출되는 이들이

세상에서 무엇이 일어나고 있는지 생각할 때

우리는 우리 자신들을,

어느 특정한 집단과의 동일시에서 벗어나 있도록 해야 한다

the cause of all these conflicts, 

is identifying our self, our essential being with some limited aspect of our experience

and conflict is the inevitable consequence of that

so here with a group of people like this,

 

이 모든 다툼, 갈등의 원인은

우리 자신, 본질적 존재를

우리 경험 중 제한되어 있는 측면과 동일시하는 것이다

그러면 다툼은 피할 수 없는 결과다

 

그래서 여기에, 이처럼 있는 사람들이,

 

who are interested in the nature of reality

or in relation to our self, what we essentially are,

i feel we have a kind of sacred duty not to identify ourselves with any paricular group,

to evolve beyond these primitive associations with a particular group of people,

a religion, a race, a nation, a creed, an ideology, a political party

 

실체의 본성에 관심을 갖는 이들,

혹은 본질적으로 우리인 것과 관련하여 있는 이들이

어느 특정 집단과의 동일시 없이 있을 수 있는 것

 

어느 집단의 사람들,

어떤 종교,

어느 인종,

어떤 신념,

어떤 이념,

어느 정당과의

원시적인 연결을 벗어나 성장하는 것

 

which doesn't mean to say that we may not have opinions

but we don't identify ourselves with them

and therefore consider that everyone who is not part of our group is somehow other than our self

the core understanding, it can be distilled into this simple sentence,

peace and happiness are the nature of our being,

and we share our being with everyone and everything

 

그것이 우리가 의견을 가질 수 없다는 뜻은 아니다

하지만 우리 자신을 그들과 동일시하지 않는다

그래서 우리 집단이 아닌 이들을, 우리 자신과 다른 것으로 생각하지 않는다

 

중심이 되는 이해는,

간단한 문장으로,

평화와 행복이 우리 존재의 본성이다,

so i feel, we have a sacred duty to understand, to feel,

and to the best of our ability live the implications of this recognition

that we share our being with everyone

so it's our sacred duty fo free ourselves with this identification with 

a particular group or a paricular race, and so on

 

그것을 이해하고, 느껴야 하는 신성한 의무를 우리가 갖는 것으로 느껴진다

그리고 우리가 할 수 있는 최선으로, 이 이해의 실행을 삶으로 사는 것

우리 존재를 모두와 나누는 것

 

우리 자신을

특정한 집단이나 특정한 인종 등등과 동일시하는 것에서

자유롭게 해야 하는 신성한 의무

 

goodness, if we can't do that, 

how can we expect people who don't have the good fortune

to be exposed to this understanding to do it?

 

아, 우리가 그럴 수 없다면,

이 이해에 노출되는 행운을 갖지 못한 이들이 그러기를 어떻게 기대할 수 있을까

 

i'm not suggesting you should in any way deny your jewish heritage

i have a great uncle who was killed at auschwitz

i know what you're talking about

so i know in any way denying temporary local level, your background,

not dismissing it

but at the same time, we should be free of it

 

난 그대가 어느 식으로든 유대인으로서 물려받은 것을 부인하라고 하는 것이 아니다

나에게는 아우슈비츠에서 돌아가신 훌륭한 삼촌이 있다

그대가 무슨 말하는지 안다

그래서 어느 식으로도, 일시적, 일부인 단계에서의 그대의 배경을

무시하라는 것이 아니다

하지만 동시에, 우리는 그것에서 자유로워야 한다

 

when we think about what's going in the world,

we should free ourselves from identification with a particular group
