'우리는 얼마나 많은 자유를 갖고 있는가'

'얼마나 많은 선택을 할 수 있는가' 라 하는

그대의 질문은 한 개별적 존재가 있는 것으로 추정한다

의지를 가진 무수한 개별적 존재들이 있다 고

 

하지만 우리가 가까이 보면,

독립적으로 존재하는 요원을 발견하지 못한다

그대 몸의 세포들이, 자신들이 무엇을 할 지 선택하는가 와 같은 말이다

아니면 그대 몸의 세포는, 모두 서로 연결되어 있는 전체의 일부인가

the movie is like a jazz improvisation

it hasn't be written previously

it's not just being acted out by the characters

there's no director or producer

 

재즈 즉흥곡 같은 영화다

미리 씌여 있지 않다

정해진 역할이 실행되는 것이 아니다

감독도 제작자도 없다

 

when you say, how much freedom do we have? how much choice do we have?

your question presumes that there is an individual entity there,

there are lots of individual entities that they have a volition

but when we look closely, we don't find that independently existing agent

it's like saying, do any of the cells in your body have the freedom to choose what they do

or the cells in your body are all part of an interconnected whole?

that doesn't mean to say that the journey of each cell throughout its life is predestined,

but nor is the cell choosing its pathway through your body

because it's one interconnected system

 

각 세포의 여정이 자신의 삶 내내, 미리 정해져 있다는 뜻이 아니다

하지만 세포가 그대의 몸을 통해 그 자신읠 길을 선택하는 것도 아니다

하나의 서로 연결되어 있는 시스템이므로

 

so in the ultimate analysis, there isn't an individual mind or an entity,

either to have free will or not to have free will

한 개인의 마음이나 한 존재가 있어서,

그들이 자유 의지를 갖거나 갖지 않는다 란 없다
