욕망의 구분

우리 욕망이 평화나 행복에서 나오고,

세상에서 여러 방식들로,

그것을 표현하고, 같이 기뻐하고, 나누기 위한 추구라면,

그러면 자유롭게 그렇게 해도 좋다

some desires attempt to use the world in service of our happiness

other desires attempt to use our happiness in service of the world

it's only the former desires that are problematic

the desires that attempt to use the world in service of our happiness,

that attempt to fulfill us with some object or substance or activity or relationships

those are problematic desires because

no object or substance and so on never truly bring us happiness we want

 

우리 행복을 위해 세상을 이용하는 욕망들이 있고,

우리 행복을 이용해서 세상에 기여하는 욕망들이 있다

전자의 욕망만이 문제다

 

우리 행복을 위해 세상을 이용하려는 욕망

우리를 어떤 물건이나 물질, 활동, 관계들로 채우려는 시도,

그런 것들이 문제가 있는 욕망이다

왜냐하면

어떤 물건이나 물질 등등 도 진실로 우리가 원하는 행복을 가져다주지 않기 때문이다

 

however if the desire is initiated from happiness,

if the purpose of the desire is to use our happiness in service of the world,

in other words, to bring this understanding out into the world,

then it would be a completely legitimate desire,

it would not lead to more suffering

 

하지만 욕망이 행복에서 시작된 것이라면

욕망의 목적이 우리 행복을 이용해서 세상에 기여하는 것이라면

다른 말로 하면, 이 이해를 세상에 가져다 내놓는 것,

그러면 그것은 완전히 타당한 욕망이다

그것은 더 많은 고통으로 끌어가지 않을 것이다

 

so there are numerous desires that come from peace or understanding or love,

and the purpose of such a desire is to bring that peace or joy out into the world,

to share it, to communicate it

but there are other desires that come from a sense of lack,

a feeling of insufficiently that i need something in order to be peaceful,

i need somethong in order to feel love,

i need something in order to be happy

 

평화나 이해, 혹은 사랑에서 나오는 셀 수 없는 욕망들이 있다

그리고 그런 욕망의 목적은,

평화나 기쁨을 세상에 가져가고, 나누고, 소통하기 위함이다

 

하지만 결핍감, 

난 평화롭기 위해서는 뭔가가 필요하다,

사랑을 느끼기 위해서는 뭔가가 필요하다,

행복하기 위해서는 뭔가가 필요하다,

라 느끼는 것에서 나오는 욕망들이 있다

 

if we feel that sort of desire,

we should investigate the one who feels it

rather than trying to fulfill it

 

우리가 그런 욕망을 느낀다면

그렇게 느끼는 자를 조사해야 한다

그것을 채우려 하기 보다

 

but if our desire come from peace or happiness

and simply seeks to express that

or celebrate or share that in some ways in the world,

then we should feel free to do so

 

하지만 우리 욕망이 평화나 행복에서 나오고,

세상에서 여러 방식들로,

그것을 표현하고, 같이 기뻐하고, 나누기 위한 추구라면,

그러면 자유롭게 그렇게 해도 좋다
