우리 함께, 모든 회피의 움직임을 그만둘 수 있을까

 

 

또한 많은 교육을 받은 이들,

나아가는 수단으로서의 지식을 통해서만 아는,

지식을 통한 인간의 상승,

그리고 그것을 계속 되풀이한다

우리 인간 존재들은,

그들이 학자, 과학자, 잘 알려진 사람들이라서, 그들을 따른다

그것에서도 슬픔이 있다

왜냐하면 지식은 제한되어 있기 때문이다

 

어떤 기관이나 조직도 우리 슬픔을 해결하지 못할 것이다

이런 것들 모두 회피다

can we together stop the whole movement of escape?

it is not an action of will or determination,

or verbally taking a vow never to escape

but actually deeply not avoiding that thing

so that memory of the past pleasures, companionship, all that,

has no longer a place,

and so that we can remain with that thing called pain completely, wholly

 

우리 함께, 모든 회피의 움직임을 그만둘 수 있을까

의지의 실행이나 결단이 아니다

말로 회파하지 않겠다 선언하는 것도 아니다

하지만 실제로 깊이, 그것을 피하지 않는다

그래서 과거 즐거웠던 것, 함꼐 했던 것, 그런 모든 것의 기억이

더는 자리를 갖지 않도록

그래서 우리가, 고통이라 불리는 것과 완전히, 전체적으로 있을 수 있게

 

that is, my son is dead, i loved him,

and i remember all the things he used to say, play

there's always the recording going on, the remeberances,

which is an escape from the actual pain

or the pain is sustained by remembrances

 

그 말은,

 

'나의 아들이 죽었다, 난 그를 사랑했다,

그리고 그가 말한, 놀던 모든 것들을 기억한다,

항상 회상이 돌아간다'

 

그것은 실제 아픔으로부터의 회피다

혹은 아픔이 회상으로 유지되고 있다

 

can i totally abandon all that?

i may feel that it may be dislayal

so many tricks i play with myself

 

완전히 그 모든 것을 그만둘 수 있을까

그것이 배신으로 느껴질 수도 있다

그렇게 나 자신과 벌이는 수많은 속임수들

 

and that's a form of not understanding or facing or going beyond sorrow

we all know this

every one of us what it means, sorrow

not only personal sorrow but the sorrow of mankind

 

이해나 마주함, 슬픔을 넘어서려는 모습이 아니다

우리 모두가 이것을 안다

우리 각자 슬픔이란 뜻을 안다

개인적 슬픔 뿐 아니라, 인류의 슬픔

 

i'm not playing on sympathy please

we are just observing what it is

a man who'll never have clean clothes,

who will always live in powerty

and the very knowing of it is a sorrow

 

난 동정을 벌이고 있지 않다, 부디

그것이 무엇인지 바라보고 있을 뿐이다

깨끗한 옷을 결코 입지 못할 사람, 항상 가난하게 살 사람,

그것을 아는 것 자체가 슬픔이다

 

also those who are highly educated, 

who only look through knowledge as a means of advancement,

the ascent of man through knowledge,

and keep repeating that

and we human beings, because they are scholars, scientists, well-known people, we follow them

in that too, there is sorrow

because knowledge is limited

and the politicians are thinking along particular, narrow, tribal lines

 

그리고 특정하게, 좁게, 지역적으로만 생각하는 정치인들

 

so there is all this enormous sense of ignorance,

which is not ignorant of books,

but ignorance of oneself

when you are aware of all that, there is sorrow

you want to do something about it, and so you join a group,

form an organization or institutions, give money and then

you think you have solved the problem

 

그렇게 이런 온갖 무수한 무지의 느낌이 있다

책에 대해 무지해서가 아니라,

자신에 대한 무지다

 

그대가 그런 모든 것을 인식할 때, 슬픔이 있다

그대는 뭔가를 하고 싶어한다, 그래서 어떤 집단에 참여한다

조직이나 단체를 만든다, 돈을 낸다,

그런 다음 그대는 그 문제를 해결했다고 생각한다

 

no institution or organization is evre going to solve our sorrow

these are all escapes

 

어떤 기관이나 조직도 우리 슬픔을 해결하지 못할 것이다

이런 것들 모두 회피다

 

so can we look at sorrow

be with it completely, without a movement of thought

and a movement of thought is to escape from it

the very word 'sorrow' colors the fact of sorrow, the pain of it

so to observe it, to live with it without the word, without the remembrance,

without the idea of going beyond it,

just to hold it completely, wholly together

 

그러니 우리가 슬픔을 바라볼 수 있을까

그것과 완전히 있어라, 생각 하나의 움직임도 없이

생각의 움직임은 그것으로부터의 회피다

슬픔'이라는 단어가 슬픔이라는 사실, 그 아픔에 색을 칠한다

 

그래서

그것을 바라보는 것, 그것과 사는 것, 말 없이,

회상 없이, 그것을 벗어나겠다는 생각 없이

그냥 완전히 붙들고 있는 것, 완전히 전체적으로

 

if one does that, what takes place?

 

그렇게 한다면, 무엇이 일어나는가
